The Role of the Defence Trade Office

Within the United States (US), the Defence Trade Office of the British Embassy is responsible for assisting UK companies to promote UK products and services for use by the US armed services, or to assist UK companies looking to team with US companies to provide economic benefit to the UK. The work of DTO staff includes:

• identifying US requirements for defence equipment and services which could be met by UK companies;
• advising and assisting UK industry on how best to meet the requirements of the US Armed Forces;
• acting as a contact and focal point for personnel from the US Department of Defense (DoD), US Armed Forces, Congress, and US industry on defence equipment trade issues;
• arranging visits by US official personnel to UK facilities;
• arranging demonstrations of and briefings on UK defence equipment.

Responsibility within the British Government for the support of the UK defence exports rests with the UKTI Defence & Security Organisation (UKTI DSO). Defence Trade Office staff within the British Embassy maintain close links with UKTI DSO in London.
